September may be the cruelest month for Career Services at UNC. Although students feel like it’s early in the semester (and let’s face it, it is!), the month of September is chock full of activities.
- Fall recruiting for seniors kicks off almost immediately
- Multiple career fairs take place
- Juniors start coming in to inquire about info sessions and panels
- Sophomores see us in droves to have resume/cover letter evaluations for major applications
- First-year students come in for a variety of class-based projects
It all adds up to one very busy month. In fact, it’s hard for me to believe the calendar when it tells me that it’s October 1. I would like to think that October is going to be more calm than September. But, there’s a big deadline tomorrow for student applications; I’m coordinating a green/sustainable careers networking night next week; the week after that is “Career Week,” which is filled with events, including a visit by Roadtrip Nation.
And did I mention that my wife and I are expecting our first baby on Oct. 23? Yes, October will be busy.
But, there’s always November. And December. Maybe 2010. Surely 2011.

I think they tell us that there are lulls in the academic year so that we stick around to see if they really happen. So far, I think I have experienced about one week that I would call “slow”. Otherwise, when students are here, life is hectic.
Thanks for the congrats, Sarah. Nah, there are never lulls in the world of student affairs. Only shifts in the types of activities. 🙂
